Dr. Omar Blibech: Increasing passion among students and experts for new sustainable environmental, health, and educational solutions

Al-Saudi: Sustainability is not just an option but an urgent necessity for a better future

Gulf University has concluded the second edition of Sustainability Week, which witnessed remarkable attendance from experts, specialists, and representatives of governmental and private institutions, alongside extensive participation from students and young researchers. The week featured a series of scientific sessions, interactive workshops, an international conference, and an accompanying exhibition that gathered qualitative initiatives from local, regional, and international entities—making the event a leading knowledge and environmental platform in Bahrain.

Dr. Omar Blibech, Director of the Center for Sustainability and Development and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, expressed his pride in the success achieved by this edition of Sustainability Week, affirming that the results exceeded expectations in terms of participation, quality of discussions, and scientific outcomes.

Dr. Blibech stated that “the conclusion of this week’s activities places upon us a greater responsibility to continue developing sustainability initiatives inside and outside the university. Over the past days, we observed increasing passion among students and experts to contribute to creating new solutions in the fields of environment, health, energy, education, and community service.”

He added that the diverse program of the week allowed participants to engage directly with experts from local and regional organizations, positively enriching the quality of discussions and scientific depth.

He explained: “Our goal was not merely to execute activities, but to build a genuine knowledge environment that encourages critical thinking and scientific research, empowering youth to transform their ideas into applicable sustainable initiatives.”

He noted that the accompanying exhibition attracted significant attention, as participating institutions showcased projects and innovations related to clean energy, resource management, recycling, and AI-powered sustainability technologies—enhancing the value of the week as a space for idea exchange and collaboration.

He further pointed out that these activities contributed to expanding the network of cooperation between the university and national and regional entities, opening the door for future research partnerships and collaborative projects in various fields.

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee emphasized that one of the most important achievements of this week was strengthening student presence in the scientific scene, noting that their participation extended beyond attendance to presenting innovative projects, moderating discussion sessions, and actively contributing to organizing the week’s events.

He added: “The effort, passion, and engagement we witnessed from the Sustainability Club students in particular—and university students in general—confirmed their ability to lead development in the field of sustainability. We saw promising models worthy of support and investment, and it is our duty as an educational institution to provide the environment that enables them to grow and advance.”

He confirmed that Gulf University will continue improving this annual event and elevating its scientific, research, and practical value, aiming to make Sustainability Week a regional reference platform in promoting sustainable development and enhancing innovation.

Dr. Blibech emphasized that the path toward a sustainable future “requires stronger practical partnerships between universities and both the public and private sectors—a direction we will strive to enhance in future editions.”

Dr. Jaafar Huwaishil Al-Saudi, member of the Organizing Committee, stressed that sustainability is not merely an option but an urgent necessity to ensure a better future.

He noted that the event highlighted the importance of sustainability in addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges worldwide, and shed light on the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals and key community and individual practices needed to advance and achieve them.

He added that Sustainability Week provided attendees with the opportunity to learn the principles of sustainability and understand how to apply the Sustainable Development Goals in their daily lives, benefiting from the broad participation of various local sectors. He also noted that the week included free medical checkups offered by specialists from the Ministry of Health and the private medical sector.

He concluded that Sustainability Week at Gulf University offered a valuable opportunity to enhance understanding and awareness of environmental issues, representing an important step toward building a sustainable society and demonstrating the university’s commitment to promoting sustainable education and good environmental practices.
