Gulf University’s commitment to realize a balance between academic excellence and environmental preservation, in line with Bahrain Vision 2030 

In the presence of H.E Dr. Diana Abdulkareem Al-Jahrami, Secretary General of the Higher Education Council, Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Higher Education Council, Gulf University announces the launch of its first Sustainability Week, tomorrow Sunday 20th October 2024 on its campus in Sanad. The event highlights the university’s leading role to promote sustainability and raise awareness around the importance of adopting sustainable practices in all aspects of life. 

The event will present a wide array of participation from various governmental and private fronts such as the Supreme Council for the Environment, Ministry of Works, Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, Ministry of Industry, and Ministry of Health. Additionally, several private companies, such as STC (Diamond Sponsor) and Insomea (Gold Sponsor), along with other supporting companies, will contribute to this initiative. 

Gulf University’s Sustainability Week program will feature various activities, including workshops and lectures on recycling, resource conservation, and ideal practices for waste reduction. Utilizing this event, the university aims to engage students and the community in achieving sustainability on both individual and institutional levels, contributing to a sustainable academic atmosphere and an integrated society. 

These initiatives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, supporting environmental protection, green economy promotion, and minimizing the planet’s damaging impacts. The university seeks to raise public awareness regarding the importance of sustainability by adopting responsible practices, such as reducing energy and water consumption in addition to increasing awareness about preserving natural resources for future generations. 

This event marks a crucial step towards building a more conscious community, consequently reflecting a positive affect on the level of quality of life and further  fosters innovation and change in daily functions to secure a better future for all. 

In a statement issued by Gulf University president, Prof. Muhannad Al-Mashhadani, “Sustainability Week is part of the university’s commitment to align with Bahrain’s approach towards sustainability in consistence with Bahrain Vision 2030. AlMashhadani added, “Gulf University believes in the importance of balancing academic excellence with environmental preservation. We strive to be an active part of building a sustainable community which responsibly manages and utilizes its natural resources, in line with the Kingdom’s vision for sustainable development across all sectors, ensuring a better future for generations to come.”

at Gulf University that “the Sustainability Week is a crucial platform to exchange insights and experiences revolving around environmental and economic challenges faced by society.” Furthermore he stated, “This event reflects Gulf University’s commitment to lead and promote sustainability along by achieving the economic and environmental goals on a local and regional scale.” 

On the same note, Dr. Blibech pointed that Sustainability Week offers a wide range of activities and functions such as, interactive workshops discussing energy preservation, recycling, and waste management in addition to discussion circles conducted by national and international professionals focusing and presenting the challenges the SDGs encounter in the Arabian Gulf region. 

On this occasion, Dr. Blibech announced the inauguration of the Sustainability Club at Gulf University, where 18 students, from different colleges of the university joined to learn about the execution of projects and initiatives that reinforce sustainability on campus and amongst the community to further encourage, foster and achieve sustainable development goals.       

In accordance to the Sustainability Week, Gulf University faculty dedicated 10 minutes in the beginning of each lecture of the past week to introduce and discuss the 17 sustainability development goals set by the United Nations to further raise awareness amongst the student body. 

It is noteworthy that Gulf University has recently obtained the UK’s Quality Assurance Accreditation (QAA), strengthening its position as one of the leading educational institutions in the region. This accreditation recognizes the university’s commitment to delivering high-quality education in accordance with the highest academic and professional standards. 

The university’s efforts to enhance the quality of education aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4, which focuses on ensuring inclusive and quality education for all and promoting lifelong learning opportunities. Gulf University’s academic programs support this goal as part of its vision to advance education that contributes to sustainable and knowledgable development.
